With the FBR income tax return deadline extended to October 31, 2026 β and a record 6.71 million returns already filed β millions of Pakistanis are now asking the same question: am I on the Active Taxpayer List? Doing an FBR ATL check takes less than a minute, and it decides whether you pay normal withholding tax rates or the much higher non-filer rates on banking, property, and vehicle transactions.
Here is how to verify your filer status online, by SMS, and through the IRIS portal β plus what to do if your name is missing.
What Is the Active Taxpayer List (ATL)?
The Active Taxpayer List is FBR’s public database of everyone who has filed their income tax return for the relevant tax year. Being on it makes you a “filer”; being off it makes you a “non-filer” β and non-filers pay significantly higher withholding taxes, in many cases up to double the filer rate.
The list is updated on a daily basis, so your status can change within days of filing your return. If you have just filed for tax year 2026, check back in a few days if your name does not appear immediately.
Method 1: FBR ATL Check by SMS to 9966 (Fastest)
The quickest way needs no internet at all:
1. Type ATL, then a space, then your 13-digit CNIC number (without dashes).
2. Send it as an SMS to 9966 from any Pakistani mobile network.
3. You will get an instant reply confirming whether your status is Active or Inactive.
If you are checking for a company or association of persons, send ATL, a space, and the 7-digit NTN to the same number, 9966.
Method 2: Check Online on the FBR Portal
For a more detailed result, use FBR’s online verification:
1. Go to the FBR website and open the Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax) section under online verification.
2. Choose to search by CNIC (individuals) or NTN (businesses).
3. Enter your 13-digit CNIC without dashes, complete the captcha, and click Verify.
4. The result shows your name and whether you are Active for the current tax year.
You can also check through the Tax Asaan mobile app, which has a built-in ATL status check using the same CNIC or NTN.
Method 3: Check in Your IRIS Account
If you are already registered with FBR, log in to IRIS (the FBR filing portal). Your dashboard shows your NTN, ATL status, complete filing history, and any pending notices β the most comprehensive view of your tax position. It is also where you file returns and respond to FBR communications.
Filed Your Return but Still Not Active?
Your name does not appear the moment you press submit β the return has to be processed first. Before contacting FBR, make sure:
β’ Your return shows as submitted in IRIS and you received the acknowledgement.
β’ Any tax due has been paid.
β’ You filed for the right tax year β the most recent one is what counts.
β’ If you filed late, note that late filers go on the ATL only after paying the ATL surcharge (Rs 25,000 for individuals).
If everything is in order and your status still has not changed after a few days, raise it with FBR through IRIS or its helpline.
Why Filer Status Matters Right Now
FBR received 6.71 million returns by October 14 β up 34% from last year β and non-salaried filers (traders, shopkeepers, professionals) surged 46%. With the October 31 deadline approaching, filing now and confirming your ATL status protects you from higher deductions for the whole year ahead.
