Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical FOV?
Horizontal FOV is the angle you can see left-to-right, vertical FOV is up-to-down. The same game setting can mean either — many PC games quote horizontal FOV, while others (like Source-engine games) build from a 4:3 horizontal value, which is why raw numbers never match between games.
How is FOV converted?
With trigonometry: vertical FOV = 2 × atan( tan(horizontal FOV ÷ 2) ÷ aspect ratio ). The calculator does the same math in every direction, and also shows the horizontal FOV your settings produce on every common aspect ratio.
Why does my FOV feel wrong on an ultrawide monitor?
If a game fixes the vertical FOV, a wider screen shows more at the sides — good. If it fixes horizontal FOV instead, an ultrawide actually crops the top and bottom. Converting your 16:9 setting to 21:9 with this tool keeps the view you are used to.
