Frequently asked questions

How does this bottleneck calculator work?

It compares real published benchmark scores — PassMark CPU Mark for processors and PassMark G3D Mark for graphics cards. Because games lean on a CPU's fast cores rather than all of its threads, the CPU score is gaming-adjusted, and your resolution and workload shift the balance: higher resolutions load the GPU more, CPU-heavy games load the processor more.

Is the bottleneck percentage exact?

No — treat it as a well-informed estimate, like every bottleneck calculator. The true bottleneck changes from game to game and scene to scene, and RAM speed, thermals and drivers matter too. The percentage tells you which part is mismatched and roughly by how much, which is what you need before upgrading.

What bottleneck percentage is bad?

Under about 10% the pairing is balanced. 10–25% is a mild mismatch most players never notice. Above 25% the weaker part starts capping frame rates noticeably, and above 45% a large share of the stronger part's power is wasted.

Why does resolution change the result?

Your CPU does roughly the same work per frame at any resolution, but the GPU's work per frame grows with pixel count. So a pair that is CPU-limited at 1080p often becomes balanced — or even GPU-limited — at 4K.
