Frequently asked questions

How does the Pokémon damage formula work?

Base damage is ⌊⌊⌊2×Level÷5+2⌋ × Move Power × Attack ÷ Defense⌋ ÷ 50⌋ + 2. Generation 9 then applies modifiers in a fixed order — spread-move reduction, weather, critical hit (×1.5), a random roll from 85 to 100, STAB (×1.5 if the move matches the attacker's type) and type effectiveness — rounding the way the games do at each step. This calculator implements that exact sequence from Bulbapedia's damage documentation, and it reproduces Bulbapedia's own worked example (a level 75 Glaceon's Ice Fang against Garchomp: 168–196 damage, 268–324 on the critical Muscle Band variant) to the point.

Which Pokémon are included?

579 fully-evolved and standalone species from Generations 1–9, with base stats and typings from PokéAPI. Mega Evolutions, Gigantamax and most alternate formes are not included; a few default formes (such as Aegislash Shield Forme and Palafin Zero Forme) are in. Both Pokémon are assumed to have 31 IVs and 0 EVs, the standard for damage calculations — use the nature and stat-stage fields to model boosts like Swords Dance.

What does "guaranteed 2HKO" mean?

Because damage rolls randomly between 85% and 100%, calculators report how many hits a KO takes. "Guaranteed 2HKO" means even the lowest rolls knock the defender out in two hits; a percentage like "43.8% chance of a 2HKO" means only the higher roll combinations finish the job that fast. A guaranteed OHKO needs the minimum roll to exceed the defender's HP.

Does this cover Terastallization and every ability?

No — Tera types, Paradox abilities, and the hundreds of item/ability interactions are beyond a web form. The "Other modifier %" field lets you fold in a known combined multiplier yourself (for example 130 for a Life Orb). Weather, burn, critical hits and doubles spread reduction are built in as toggles.
